Android is developed by a developer association known as the Open Handset Alliance and is commercially sponsored by Google. Launched in November 2007, the first commercial Android device, the HTC Dream, was released in September 2008.

Competing with the Android ecosystem and Forks includes Fire OS (developed by Amazon) or Descent. However, the "Android" name and logo are trademarks of Google that restrict the use of the Android brand to limit "unauthorised" devices outside of its ecosystem.
Source Code
The source code was used to develop versions of Android as a specialised user interface for other electronics such as game consoles, digital cameras, portable media players, PCs and more. Some well-known derivatives include Android TV for televisions and OS for wearable, both developed by Google.

Android software packages that use the APK format are generally available on open source platforms such as Google Play Store, Samsung Galaxy Store, Huawei Apple Gallery, Cafe Bazaar and Getzar or Optoid or F-Droid are gone.
Android is the world's best-selling tablet and tablet operating system since 2011 and 2013.
